Cherished By You Blog Tour + New Excerpt

Today kicks off the start of Cherished By You’s blog tour, and I’m so excited to read all the bloggers’ reviews of Cherished By You! As many of you know, one the greatest ways to support an author is by leaving a review for their books wherever you purchased it. I try to make it a point to read every review, whether it’s on a sales platform (Amazon, iBooks, etc.) or Goodreads, because I love growing from the feedback from readers. I feel, as a writer, that’s what we should take away most from reviews, how our audience feels about our work, how we can improve said work and what we should keep doing to entertain our fans. I know not everyone is going to enjoy every book I write. You’re going to have a couple you love more than others, or a storyline that captivated you more so than another’s in the series. And that’s okay. But I want to know how you feel regardless. It will make me a better writer, and that’s what I strive for each time I start writing a new book. So, thank you to those of you who have already left reviews! To those of you who haven’t yet, I encourage you to please consider leaving a review once you’ve finished reading Cherished By You; I’d greatly appreciate it! And a special thanks to all the blogs who participate this week in Cherished By You’s Blog Tour (October 11th-17th)! Thank you for taking the time to create your blog posts, write your reviews, and share my new release with your followers! And thank you to Southern Belle Promotions for hosting my release day blitz and blog tour for Cherished By You! Enjoy the new excerpt below from Chapter Three, and don’t forget to check out Cherished By You’s soundtrack, its awareness page and the clothes/scenes boards!
“I can’t believe you agreed to live with a woman,” Cash said, sitting down on the couch in my living room with a beer in his hand.
It was Saturday afternoon, and most of the gang was over at my place, waiting for Tessa and her brother to arrive so we could help move all of her stuff in. Maverick and Harper were at home with their baby girl, Seghen, and Paige had a work function with a client.
I really couldn’t believe it either. I’d never had a roommate before who wasn’t some sort of family member, but I knew I didn’t want Tessa living in some dilapidated hole in Grand Concourse again. Just hearing her talk about growing up there pissed me off.
“Living with a woman isn’t so bad,” Carter stated proudly, with his arm slung over Elly’s shoulder. “They make the place smell good. They’re nice to look at.”
“They cook,” Fletcher added, rubbing Bayler’s thigh. They weren’t living together yet, but they stayed together enough that he enjoyed the benefits of Bayler’s excellent cooking skills.
“Not all of them cook,” Carter retorted, nodding his head toward his wife.
“Hey!” Elly exclaimed, smacking him in the stomach. “I’m cooking your baby right now.”
The room filled with laughter as I paced over to the window and looked down at the sidewalk. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure whether or not Tessa would like living with me. I’d had the place cleaned twice this week in anticipation of her arrival.
“But Tessa loves cooking,” Elly continued, smiling up at me. “You can finally stop eating out every night.”
I scoffed, glancing over my shoulder at her. “I don’t eat out every night.”
Bayler laughed. “All you have in your fridge are takeout boxes and condiments.”
“And beer!” Carter said, clinking his bottle with Fletcher’s.
“Ladies,” Fletcher stated, shaking his head at the women. “Jameson has the necessities. Lay off him.”
“Tessa is going to freak when she sees the fridge,” Elly said, laughing along with Bayler.
I turned to face the gang as anxiety tumbled in my stomach. “What do you mean? Why would she freak out?”
“Because Tessa enjoys cooking,” Bayler explained.
“Yeah,” Elly said, nodding. “She’s used to having a stocked kitchen, especially since she’s cooked for her and her brother most of her life.”
Now I felt bad about not going grocery shopping. The truth was, I did order takeout often, only because it was easier than attempting to cook a meal. I’d grown up with either a maid cooking for me or my grandma, but no matter how many times Janice Jameson tried to teach me how to cook, the meal never turned out the way she made it.
“You guys can go grocery shopping later,” Cash said, running through the television channels. “That way she can pick out whatever the hell she wants.”
“Maybe she’ll even teach you how to cook,” Elly teased, nudging my arm.
“Yeah,” Bayler continued, pointing her beer bottle at me. “Every guy should know how to cook. Women love a home-cooked meal they don’t have to make themselves.”
“I’m not trying to find a woman,” I stated, furrowing my brows.
The gang laughed at my candid response, despite the fact that it was true. I’d practically given up on finding a good woman during my college years. The girls I seemed to attract back then only wanted my help passing a class. The only date I’d been on since was a few years ago when my grandma set me up with her neighbor, Elly. The chemistry wasn’t there, so we became friends instead, which was perfectly fine with me. She was still in love with Carter, and I’d been a loner most of my life. When Carter moved back to New York, he and Elly started dating, and I gained another friend. Our group of friends continued to grow after that with the addition of Carter’s sisters, Harper and Bayler, falling for two of our own, Maverick and Fletcher.
“I call bullshit, Justin,” Bayler exclaimed, rolling her eyes. She leaned into Fletcher’s side and rested her feet up on the coffee table.
The laughter quickly died down at her blunt retort.
“Excuse me?” I asked, deflecting my surprise.
“All men are predisposed to think with their penises,” she explained, entertaining everyone with her words. “I don’t care how much of a genius you are; you’re still a man, which means that brain of yours down south is focused on sex just like every other man’s.”
Laughter grew louder around me as I stared her down, the smile spreading wide across my face. We got a kick out of giving each other a hard time, and I enjoyed dishing it out just as much as everyone else. Leaning down next to her ear, I said, “No, Bayler, what I meant was, I don’t have to try to find a woman.”
She nearly spit out her beer as she smacked me on the arm and laughed. “See! Just like every other guy! I knew you had a dick in there somewhere, Jameson.”
“Is this the part where I tell you I know how to use it, too?” I asked sarcastically, laughing along with her.
A knock on the door sounded before she could reply, so I walked over to answer it. Opening the door, I found Tessa and a younger guy standing behind her, with three suitcases resting at their sides and a duffle bag slung across his body. She wore an old pair of ripped jeans and a hoodie. Her long brown hair was knotted on top of her head, but it was her light blue-gray eyes smiling back at me that caught my attention the most.
“Hey,” I said, grabbing one of the rollers. “Come on in.”
“Thanks,” she said, crossing the threshold into my apartment.
The Love in the City series is about a group of friends looking for love in New York City. Each book is about a different couple, so they can be read as standalones. The stories are told from both the female and male point of views, and they all end in happily ever afters, no cliffhangers here! Finally, all the book covers are different colors to represent a certain awareness or cause that is referenced in each book. Grab the first book in the series, Wanted By You, for FREE today!

Home Sweet Home

I recently had the opportunity to visit and explore the city my Love in the City gang calls home: New York City! I got invited to the Sexy in the City Author Event which took place on May 30th, but I made a trip out of if by flying in on Wednesday, May 27th, and doing a little book research. It’s just as big and crowded and overwhelming as I thought it would be, but I came back to Kansas with a better grasp on the city and its people, which will definitely help me write the rest of the series. I stayed with my friend, Lauren, who is also the owner of CherryRed’s Reads. She lives in the Bronx and showed me the city in such a short period of time; I’m so grateful for her welcoming into her home and taking the time to play tour guide for me! The city was a huge eye-opener for me, since I come from a place where we’re able to see for miles in any direction. In New York City, that’s just not possible. Everything is a buzz. The people always seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere or do something, but they’re nicer than most people make them out to be. I came to New York thinking the locals would easily spot me as a foreigner and maybe even tell me to get the hell out of their way, but that never happened. I was welcomed with opened arms and patience. While there are taxis and Uber that are used by many, lots of locals use the subway and everyone walks everywhere! As a girl who is used to driving and doesn’t handle roller coasters well, I couldn’t stomach the subway. The whiplash that ensued as the train stopped and started so quickly at each station made me so nauseous, I paid for us to use Uber and it was totally worth it. But I’m still glad I walked away saying I rode the subway because that’s something we don’t have here in Kansas. However, it made me appreciate my ’98 Chevy Monte Carlo just that much more. I could never give up driving my own car, but I totally commend those people who can drive in NYC! It takes a certain set of stealthy skills and a few foul phrases for a person to master driving in the city, which made transportation even more entertaining as our friends, Heather and Jeremy and Kelly, navigated us through the city! Kudos to all of you who drive in the city and whose stomachs can handle the subway! If I close my eyes and listen closely, I can still hear the male automated voice telling all train passengers to, “Stand clear of the closing doors.” Like I said, it’s something I’m proud to say I did, but I will definitely stick to driving a car!

I’m so thankful I was able to be with friends who knew how to get around the city, who knew what to watch for and what to avoid, where all the city’s secrets lie (like the one in Grand Central Station) as well as all the city’s wonderful landmarks. New York City is full of history and beauty, and I truly believe it is a place everyone should experience at least once in their lives. I know if I would’ve been on my own, I wouldn’t have had the same experience or saw everything that I did.

New York pie (also known as pizza) totally ruined me for all other pizza! I had to fold this in half (hot dog style) to eat it, and every bite was so freaking delicious! I won’t be able to look at Pizza Hut the same.

NYCpizzaI also now understand why Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski ate Shake Shack so much during Emily Giffin’s movie adaptation of her book, Something Borrowed. The food is absolutely to die for. I’d come back to NYC just for more Shake Shack.

NYCshakeshackThe Strand Bookstore is a book lover’s paradise (I spent $80 dollars there)! As in, they have huge, tall shelves full of books from not only traditionally published authors but also some self-published. It was money well spent since I purchased some of my favorite authors’ books and this awesome shirt:

NYCshirtFAO Schwarz, the oldest toy store in the US, the toy store known from movies such as Big and Home Alone 2, was so big and amazing; I couldn’t have walked out of there without buying something for my nieces and nephew. For more pictures from my time in the store and to see all the different sections they have, check out my Facebook profile. It’s closing in July 2015 due to high rent, so if you get the chance to go to NYC before then, definitely stop in FAO Schwarz.

NYCfaoThe Freedom Tower and the 9/11 Memorials were breathtakingly beautiful. It was the first memorial I’d ever visited that I could say I lived through when the historical event actually happened, so it touched me in more ways that I can describe. Lauren showed me the church fence where locals hung signs for their missing loved ones as well as a building that still had soot on it from the crashes. A nearby firehouse memorialized its fighters with a wall mural on the side of its building. The city and its people have definitely done a brilliant job at remembering those we lost on that tragic day, from family and friends to those who put their lives on the line to save others. It’s truly an area of New York people should take the time to visit and remember.

NYCfreedomNYCsouthOn Saturday, I had the joy of attending my first book signing as an author. The Sexy in the City Author Event took place at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Times Square. Times Square is just how it’s depicted on TV and movies: It’s lit bright and crowded and filled with all sorts of people from tourists to local entertainers dressed up (or hardly wearing anything). But back to the signing.

NYCsigningAs I found my table in the ballroom, I was in awe of the goodies our hosts provided us like the bag filled with snacks and essentials and the awesome wine glasses they personalized with our names. They thought of everything, and I really appreciated that! After I set up my table and banner, I took in my surroundings, checking out the other authors and feeling so incredibly grateful to be in the same room full of so much talent. My table was in between T. Torrest’s and Heidi McLaughlin’s, two of my favorite authors, and it was such a pleasure to finally meet them! They were so nice and made me feel so welcomed, and less like a small fish in a big pond! I also had the opportunity to meet the woman who encouraged me to pursue my dream of writing, Jennifer Probst. I cannot thank her enough for being such a great friend. She’s been so supportive of me from the very beginning. She’s always been there for me whenever I’ve had any problems on my journey as a writer. It was just another dream come true to have her in attendance at my first signing since she’s been such a huge influence on me and my books. She’s one of the many authors I look up to, and she’s so sweet and personable with not only her readers but also her fellow authors. That’s the type of writer we all should aspire to be, and I’m so happy to have her as a role model. I truly hope we get to attend another event together in the future!

All in all, I had a wonderful time in New York, and I would love to come back someday. But for now, I’m happy to be back in Kansas! I want to thank my friends for welcoming me to their side of the country and for showing me a fantastic time, even though I’m such a pussy when it comes to the subway! I also want to thank the Sexy in the City hosts and their crew for inviting me to the event and making it such a success. Lastly, I want to thank all of the readers who stopped by my table on Saturday. I had so much fun chatting with all of you, and I hope you had as much fun as I did at the signing. You made my first signing a success in my eyes just by coming to see me, and I truly hope I get to come back for another signing in the future. A few of my Nuss’ Navy members got to meet one another at the signing, and I totally loved introducing you to each other! If you’d like to join my Navy, click here! I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without readers, so THANK YOU!

Steph

Love in the City: The If List

Hey, everyone! I hope you’re having a great day! I’m just dropping in to let you in on the greatest invention ever! It’s this new website called The If List

The If List, also known as The Imagine Film List, is a website designed for movie and casting ideas, and my Love in the City series is now listed on the site! Essentially, it’s a place where you, the fans, can cast your ideas for the characters if the series was ever made into a movie or a TV show! I also think this site is an awesome way to get more books into the entertainment industry and onto the big screen or your TV screen at home. Producers and casting directors could visit The If List and check out what people want to see turned into movies and TV shows, and who they’d like as the cast. The If List is the perfect place to voice your opinion on what you want to see in movie theaters or on TV and who you’d like as the cast!

So, if you’re like me when you read and imagine certain actors or actresses playing the characters, please check out the website, support the Love in the City page and cast your own Love in the City gang by clicking here! I’d love to see your casting ideas for Ellyson and Carter as well as Maverick and Harper and the rest of the gang! Thank you so much for all your love and support with the series! I know a lot of you have said the books read like an episode of Friends, and I absolutely love hearing that! Now, you have the chance to cast the gang and, who knows, maybe it will hit the screen someday all because of you and The If List!

And while you’re there, check out the other Bandit Publishing books on the website: The Mystic Series by B.C. Burgess, The Keatyn Chronicles by Jillian Dodd, and That Boy by Jillian Dodd

Xo!

Blog Hop, Hooray!

I’ve been tagged in this fun author blog hop by the amazing Amanda Aksel, author of The Man Test, which I absolutely loved! I’m so happy to call her a friend and can’t wait for more books from her! Thanks, girl!

So, here’s to keeping the hop alive with my interview:

1) What am I working on?

I’m currently working on the second book in my Love in the City series, Fantasized By You. The series is about a group of friends trying to find love in the city, and each book is about a different couple. The first book in the series, Wanted By You, released at the end of February, and I’m hoping to have book two out in the summer of 2014!

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

In my Love in the City series, every book has a love story and a message of awareness. The covers of the books will be a different color representing an awareness referenced in each book. I think it’s important to not only tell a great love story, but also share a meaningful message along with it. That’s what I hope my work achieves.

3) Why do I write what I do?

This quote by Cyril Connolly sums up why I write: “Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.” I write because writing is something I have to do. I have these voices in my head begging me to tell their story, and I enjoy doing so. When I read, I’m constantly falling in love with the secondary characters along with the main characters, so I love book series where the secondary characters get their own story. I’m a sucker for series and sequels, so you’ll probably never see a standalone from me. I write what I love to read.

4) How does your writing process work?

Outlining is a must for me. I’m not one of those writers who can just sit down and let the voices in my head do the writing. I’m super organized and have notes about each of the books in my series on my computer, my email, a notebook, the notes app on my iPhone, etc. I need peace and quiet to write, and I usually write in bed. I also make a playlist for each book that I listen to when I’m not writing. So, when I take my dog on a walk or work out, I’ll listen to songs that go along with my story or my characters. I feel like that’s a way to stay in “writing mode” even when I’m not actually writing.

To continue the blog hop, I’m tagging three authors (I couldn’t pick just two)…

Elle Jefferson (author of At Death It Begins series), JC Emery (author of Bayonet Scars series), and Katrina Vore (author of The Dark Lotus series)! Tag, you’re it! I can’t wait to meet you girls in Phoenix next year at the Indie Mashup signing!

Such A Sweet Fantasy

The first draft of Fantasized By You (Love in the City, #2) is finished!

So, if you haven’t read Wanted By You (Love in the City, #1) or told all of your friends and family and neighbors about it, please do because I’m so excited for the Love in the City gangs’ story to continue in book two! All of the characters will be accounted for, so I pinky-promise you won’t miss anything or anyone!

And you should read it because…

P.S. – Who wants the blurb for Fantasized By You?

A Dream Come True

I’m officially a published author.

How do I know this?

1. Two bloggers made teasers for my book.

2. Another blogger included GIFs in her review.

3. You can find me on Amazon, iBooks, and Barnes & Noble.

4. I found jellyfish pirating my book.

At first, I was pissed. I still am pissed because my book is $3.99! You can’t even get a meal at a fast food restaurant for that cheap anymore. So, the fact that people have to steal my book because they can’t “afford” it pisses me off.

With that being said, screw all those damn jellyfish! I know I have loyal readers out there who have bought the book because they’ve messaged me about it. They’ve left a review for it. They’ve asked me when book two is coming out. They actually care. So, thank you, to all of you who are loyal readers, who love the written word enough to spend your hard earned money on the things you love instead of being a cheap-ass jellyfish!

Since publishing Wanted By You last week, things have been a little crazy but incredibly fun! I’ve loved getting to meet people from all over the world, from here in the US to the UK and Australia; it’s been mind-blowingly awesome and I can’t wait to meet more of you!

Another thing: fangirling. I’m so used to being a fangirl myself, I can’t even wrap my head around having others fangirling over me and my book. I will never get used to that. I love reading and writing so much that I could talk about books all day. So, whether I’m reading a message from someone saying they loved the book or I’m reading a review, I’m right there with them fangirling over every little thing because I’m just as excited as they are about the book and for me to finish writing book two! So, if you want to talk about my book or the Love in the City series with me, shoot me a message or comment here on my website. I love talking about books!

I’ve also loved reading honest feedback from you, the readers, because it’s helping me better myself as a writer. Right now as I read through reviews, I’m figuring out what readers love about my writing and what I need to work on. So please, keep the reviews coming! I also have some treats to share with all of you once I get more reviews:

  • When I get 50 reviews, I’ll post the Wanted By You soundtrack (37 songs)!
  • When I get 100 reviews, I’ll post the Polyvore boards (aka the clothes) from Wanted By You!
  • When I get 125 reviews, I’ll post some extras from Wanted By You, e.g., all 28 items from the Bucket List Countdown and other goodies!

So, if you haven’t left a review for Wanted By You yet, please consider doing so! I’d love you for it! Plus, I know you secretly want these extras as much as I’m dying to share them with you!

Again, thank you to everyone who hasn’t been a jellyfish, who’s bought a copy of my book and supported me from the very beginning. Becoming a published writer has been a dream come true for me, and I’m incredibly honored that so many of you are ready for more from me.
